In 2006 Dubai had around 40 sports activities and since then there has been a tremendous growth in the number of sport events in Dubai. Today there are more than 400 sport events taking place in Dubai, this growth has placed Dubai as a major sports destination on the global map. This growth has opened a lot of avenues for the local sports industry, however growth also brings a lot of responsibility on the government. Some of the biggest responsibilities are to ensure safety and security for these events as well ensuring legal accountability of event organizers, authorized private security firms, sporting regulatory bodies, fans, teams and other participants. In addition to this professional sport is facing intense scrutiny as never before and the integrity of sport and the governing body that run them is crucial.
The government has been working towards creating robust policies and practices that will ensure the growth of the sports industry as well as maintain high level of best practices. Today everything is measurable and accountability is more important than ever, hence the UAE is also working towards minimizing self-regulation from sporting bodies and bringing it under federal law. The government has also set the requirements for organizers and venue managers which has subject them to specific new compliance requirements and oversight, aimed at ensuring the UAE is aligned with or setting global best practice. The organizers and venue managers also need to designate a qualified event security officer to coordinate with the police observer ensuring the use of latest technology in communications and crowd management, effectively mandating a blend of knowledge with modern capabilities, to increase safety and security as appropriate for modern day sporting event.
The Government of Dubai and the Dubai Sports Council are fully committed to driving the growth of the sport sector in Dubai by strategically increasing the number of sports events as well as creating a strong legal and integral framework around these events to ensure that Dubai becomes and stays the preferred sport destination. There are various initiatives taking place to support the growth of the Sport industry in Dubai and one of such initiatives is the Future Sports City Summit which is organized by MICE Quotient and is supported by The Dubai Sports Council.
