Today the Danish bid for 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta was presented to FISA Masters Rowing Commission in London. Should the event be awarded Denmark, the participants will have a scenic venue on a natural lake in a beautiful forest just 10 miles from Copenhagen – the capital awarded Sport Event City 2011.

“The presentation went very well and I’m confident that our strong bid more than met the objectives of FISA. We will make the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta a celebration of our sport, mixing the rowers’ sport performances with spectator friendly surroundings and services. We are confident that we can show an event of high international standard in the beautiful and natural surroundings of Lake Bagsvaerd, with everything at close range and handled by experienced event partners,” says Henning Bay Nielsen, president of the Danish Rowing Federation.

“It was a very nice presentation, and there might be a big interest for coming to Copenhagen. There are many Danish masters rowers, who over the years have contributed to promote masters rowing. A masters event in Denmark could be payback time,” says Tone Pahle, chair of FISA Masters Rowing Commission.

“The Danish coastline is 7,314 km and Denmark has more than 1,000 lakes. This explains why Denmark has a long-standing and strong tradition for rowing on both elite and recreational levels. Nevertheless it has been quite some years since Denmark last hosted a rowing World Championship and we are very pleased to present the Danish bid for the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark that will partner the event.

Lake Bagsvaerd is a natural lake surrounded by beautiful Danish forest. The lake has been used for international rowing events for many decades. Previously numerous international rowing regattas were staged at the lake, for example the 1987 World Rowing Championships and the 2000 U23 World Rowing Championships.

Lake Bagsvaerd is in the middle of a forest but the regatta facilities are less than 10 miles away from the city hall square (and Tivoli) in the center of Copenhagen with easy access. Copenhagen is the main hub for all air travel in this region of Northern Europe. Its stunning international airport is one of the newest in Europe and serves all the major airlines in the world.

Lately Canoe Marathon World Cup 2012 was held at Lake Bagsvaerd and 2013 Canoe Marathon World Championships and 2015 Canoe Sprint World Cup will take place here.

The bid for the 2016 World Rowing Masters Regatta was presented by the Danish Rowing Federation, Sport Event Denmark and the Cities of Copenhagen, Gladsaxe and Lyngby- Taarbaek. With these committed partners in place, Denmark has thus many years of event planning experience to offer to FISA.
