The Premier, Mr Steve Bracks, today announced the new Board of Directors of Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Pty Ltd, the organising committee of the Melbourne Games.
‘The Board possesses a good balance of sporting and commercial expertise and will ensure a very successful Commonwealth Games event to showcase Victoria as the event capital of Australia.’ Mr Brakes said.
Mr Bracks said the Company’s Constitution stated that the Board must be equally balanced with State Government appointments (nominated by the Premier) and Commonwealth Games movement appointments (with two nominated by the Commonwealth Games Federation and the remainder by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association)
The Board comprises:
Ronald J. Walker, AO, CBE – Chairman
Mr Walker is founder and Chairman of one of Australia’s largest private chemical companies. For his community efforts he was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and an Officer of Australia (AO). He is Chairman of the Victorian Major Events Corporation.
Salvatore (Sam) Coffa, AM, JP – Deputy Chairman
As a former weightlifting champion and Mayor of Hawthorn, Mr Coffa has used his wide expertise to advance the interest of sport in Australia. He has served on the weightlifting juries as both Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Mr Coffa is President of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association.
Perry Crosswhite
Mr Crosswhite is one of Australia’s most experienced sports administrators. He has been involved in every aspect of sport from his participation in the Olympics in basketball on three occasions to his contribution in establishing the Australian Institute of Sport. Mr Crosswhite is CEO of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association.
Mr Mike Fennell, CD
Mr Fennell has held a number of senior management positions including President of Air Jamaica and Managing Director of Berger Paints. His involvement with sports includes responsibilities with both Olympic and Commonwealth Games organisations. Since 1994, Mr Fennell has been Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
John Tierney, B Comm, ACA
Mr Tierney is a Chartered Accountant and businessman with extensive experience in New Zealand and the South Pacific region. He is a sports administrator holding positions on the National Olympic Committee in the Cook Islands. A Regional Vice President for Oceania, Mr Tierney is a member of the Executive Board of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
Donald Argus, AO
As Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Argus oversaw the growth of the National Australia Bank into Australia’s largest bank. He has extensive experience of strategic development and risk management. Since July 1999, Mr Argus has been Chairman of BHP.
Alison Lansley
Ms Lansley is a partner in the Melbourne office of Mallesons Stephen Jaques where she specialises in advising large corporations and government instrumentalities. She regularly presents lectures on topics such as takeovers, prospectuses and directors’ duties.
Frank King
As a principle of FJ and JM King and Associates, Mr King specialises in providing policy and strategic advice to corporates doing business with the public sector. He has held a wide variety of positions with the Victorian Government and has acted as a UN adviser overseas.
Don Stockins, OAM
Mr Stockins has been associated with the administration of sport for many years, alongside his full time position within the Government of Western Australia. He is Vice President of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association and since 1995, has been President of the WA division.
Gregory Hyams
Mr Hyams is a First Assistant Secretary within the Department of Premier and Cabinet and has served on the Finance Committee of Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Bid Pty Ltd. His is an interim appointment, pending further consideration by the Premier of the State Government’s final representation on the Board.
