Andrew Parsons faces a challenge from South Korea’s Dong Hyun Bae to secure a third term as president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The IPC today announced the names of candidates who will stand for election to its governing board on September 27 at this year’s IPC General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea.

Under the new IPC Constitution, which has been effective since June 28, 2024, the IPC Governing Board will be comprised of one president, two vice-presidents, and seven members-at-large.

They will be joined by the chairperson and first vice-chairperson of the IPC Athletes’ Council and two appointed members.

Parsons was first elected as president in 2017, succeeding Sir Philip Craven, who led the organisation for 16 years.

In 2021, he was re-elected unopposed for a second term.

Prior to joining the IPC, he was president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and Americas Paralympic Committee.

Parsons will now face opposition from Hyun Bae, currently the head of the Korea Para Nordic Skiing Federation.

For the two IPC vice-president roles, there are seven candidates. The first vice-president must not be the same gender as the president and the second vice-president cannot be of the same gender as the first vice-president.

The three candidates for first vice-president are Chelsey Gotell (Canada and World Boccia), Leila Marques Mota (Portugal), and Ming-Chu Mu (Chinese Taipei).

The four candidates for second vice-president are Kurt Fearnley (Australia), John Petersson (Denmark), Juan Pablo Salazar (Colombia), and Nick Webborn (Great Britain).

There are additionally 28 candidates for the seven member-at-large roles. At least three elected members should be female and at least three male. One position is open.
