The Miami Marlins, of North American top-tier baseball’s MLB, claim to have become the first US major league sports franchise to have two women simultaneously running their off-field operations after appointing Caroline O’Connor as president of business operations.

This move, announced yesterday (November 14), comes with the Marlins having made history two years ago by naming Kim Ng as the MLB’s first female general manager.

O’Connor’s responsibilities in her new role will include sales, partnerships, marketing, human resources and diversity, equity and inclusion, and special projects.

O’Connor has said: “I think we’re a really special organization … [Marlins owner] Bruce Sherman has put a lot of trust in us, and he really looked at merit and who can do the job.

“I’m really excited about it. I think it makes our organization unique and stand out and shows what women can do and the roles that they can hold.”

In a statement, Sherman added: “We are fortunate to have someone with Caroline’s business acumen and vision leading our day-to-day business operations. Her passion and drive for success are unmatched in our game and the South Florida market.”
