IMG, the international sports and entertainment company, has today (April 1) completed its acquisition of the Madrid Open, the prestigious event on the men's ATP and women's WTA tennis tours, and the Acciona Open de España golf tournament.

The deal was agreed with Cyprus-based tournament organizer Super Slam in December and has now been concluded following approval from the ATP and WTA.

Super Slam, owned by former Romanian tennis player and billionaire businessman Ion Tiriac, had been the organizer of the Madrid Open since 2009.

The tournament, one of nine ATP Masters 1000 and four WTA 1000 mandatory events, will join IMG’s roster of ATP and WTA tennis events, including the Miami Open.

Through the acquisition, Madrid Trophy Promotion (MTP), the Spanish entity that operates the tournament, will become part of IMG, with MTP’s chief executive and tournament director Gerard Tsobanian becoming the agency’s senior vice-president of tennis events.

Tsobanian and his team will continue to oversee the day-to-day running of the competition as part of IMG’s global tennis events division led by Gavin Forbes.

The 20th-anniversary edition of the tournament will take from April 26 to 8 May at its usual home at the Caja Magica in the Spanish capital.

The Madrid Open, title sponsored by insurance company Mutua Madrilena, is one of two major clay-court events leading up to the French Open grand slam in Paris.

The event was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but returned last year in its usual April and May slot with German Alexander Zverev winning the men’s edition and Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka securing the women’s trophy.

MTP also runs the Acciona Open de España European Tour event, which IMG’s golf events division will support.

The tournament (formerly the Spanish Open) typically takes place in October at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid golf club in the city.

Sam Zussman, IMG co-president of media and events, said: “We are proud to add the Mutua Madrid Open and Acciona Open de España to our portfolio. Drawing on our long history in tennis and golf and the MTP team’s expertise, we will build these events into even more unique and remarkable experiences for players, partners, and fans.”

MTP also runs the Acciona Open de España on golf’s European Tour, which IMG’s golf events division will now support.

The tournament (formerly known as the Spanish Open) typically takes place in October at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid and is broadcast to more than 120 countries.
