MotoGP adds Kazakhstan race to 2023 calendar

The addition will see Kazakhstan become the 30th country to host a motorcycle grand prix since 1949.

Dorna Sports, the organizer of motorcycling’s MotoGP World Championship, has announced that a race in Kazakhstan will be added to the 2023 championship calendar as the series continues its expansion into new markets.

Dorna said today (September 27) that a five-year deal had been struck for the country to host a grand prix at the new Sokol International Racetrack.

The deal will see Kazakhstan become the 30th country to host a motorcycle grand prix since 1949, while Sokol will become the 74th venue to host a grand prix.

In a statement, MotoGP said: “Located just outside Kazakhstan’s largest city Almaty, Skokl is a brand-new motorsport complex constructed in the heart of Central Asia.

“The region will be a new pitstop for MotoGP as the sport continues to expand around the world, engaging with new markets and fanbases.”

While details of the 2023 MotoGP calendar have not been released, it will most likely increase beyond the 20 races scheduled this year.

The Kazakhstan race announcement follows MotoGP striking a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with India last week, which will see a race event staged at the Buddh International Circuit starting in either 2023 or 2024.

The Buddh International Circuit was once home to motor racing’s prestigious Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix, which was held for three years from 2011 to 2013 until it was discontinued due to financial, tax, and bureaucratic hurdles.

Dorna Sports also signed an MOU with the Saudi Motorsport Company, a commercial entity set up by the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation national governing body, to add the kingdom to the MotoGP calendar.

Saudi Arabia has hosted a round of the F1 since 2021, Formula E since 2018, the Dakar Rally since 202, and the Extreme E all-electric series since 2021.
