The final of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup soccer tournament drew an audience of almost 5 million on French commercial broadcaster TF1 as England’s Chelsea defeated French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea's 3-0 victory over PSG – who are also the reigning UEFA Champions League winners – at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, was watched by 4.8 million viewers on TF1, representing a 30.1% audience share.
Unexpectedly, the figure was significantly lower than the Champions League final, when 11.8 million watched PSG beat Inter Milan 5-0.
However, the Club World Cup final did beat France’s encounter with the Netherlands in the UEFA Women’s Euro last night.
France’s 5-2 win attracted under 2.3 million viewers. The match was originally scheduled for TF1, then the TMC TV channel, before finally being shown on public-service broadcaster France 2.
The final of the controversial Club World Cup was simultaneously shown by the DAZN sports streaming service, which held global rights to the entire tournament.
