Volleyball’s FIVB governing body and its Volleyball World commercial vehicle have announced the US and Canada as co-hosts for its top-tier Women’s Volleyball World Championship in 2027, while Qatar has been awarded hosting rights to the men’s edition in 2029.

The 2027 edition will be the first time that a Volleyball World Championship will be staged in the US and Canada, with the event coming a year before the US hosts the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California.

California’s Honda Center and OCVIBE stadiums will host the final rounds, with four more host cities across the US and Canada to be announced to stage the tournament’s pool phase and round of 16.

The men’s edition in 2029, meanwhile, will head to the Middle East for the first time, with Qatar’s capital Doha set to host the competition.

Poland has already been confirmed as the host for the Men’s Volleyball World Championship for 2027, while this year’s men’s and women’s tournaments were staged by the Philippines and Thailand, respectively.

Each edition of the World Championships features 32 teams competing in 64 matches over 17 days.

Volleyball World chief executive, Ugo Valensi, said: “The caliber of our hosts highlights volleyball’s worldwide momentum. Bringing the World Championships to North America and the Middle East – two of our most dynamic growth markets – will connect us with new fans and deliver unforgettable experiences in arenas and across broadcast, OTT, and digital platforms.

“We are opening the door to fresh partnerships, investment, and fan engagement, while driving innovation and long-term value for the sport.”

Awarding hosting rights to the US comes as Volleyball World looks to expand the sport’s popularity in the country in the lead-up to the LA28 games.

The US recently played host to fixtures during World Volleyball’s 2025 Nations League. Week three (July 9 to 13) of the women’s tournament was staged in Arlington, Texas, while week two (June 25 to 29) of the men’s tournament was held in Chicago, Illinois.

It also comes three months after Volleyball World announced a “landmark” broadcast partnership in the US with Paramount-owned sports network CBS Sports and Fox-owned Big 10 Network (BTN).

The deal marks the first time that top-level volleyball competitions, including the 2025 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) and the FIVB men's and women's 2025 World Championships, will be available nationally on US television.

Coverage of both tournaments will be distributed across CBS Sports and BTN, including every US men’s and women’s national team fixture.
