The 2035 edition of the men's Rugby World Cup could become the first staged in South America after a joint bid was submitted by Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay earlier this week.

The bid, unveiled by the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR), outlines that Argentina, the dominant rugby-playing nation in South America, would host matches in 11 stadiums across 10 cities, while the other three nations would each put forward one venue.

Felix Paez Molina, president of the UAR, commented: "We have the opportunity to show the world our passion for this sport, our ability to host major events, and everything our countries have to offer.

"We take on this challenge firmly believing that our region deserves an opportunity of this size.

"Our hope is that, for the first time, a Rugby World Cup can be played in this part of the world."

Argentina and Uruguay are already set to each host action from men's soccer's 2030 FIFA World Cup, with Paraguay joining them – they will each stage one game from that event.

Argentina's rugby union heritage is strong, and the country's men's national team has reached the semi-finals of the RWC three times so far – in 2007, 2015, and 2023.

Uruguay have qualified for the tournament five times; meanwhile, Chile have done so once.

The 2027 RWC will take place in Australia across October and November next year, while the 2031 edition will take place entirely in the US – the first time the event takes place in the Americas overall.

In terms of the timeframe for a 2035 RWC host (or hosts) to be chosen by governing body, World Rugby, site visits and feasibility assessments are set to take place over the next few months and into early 2027, with the preferred host to be selected next May. Other bids by Spain and Japan have already been confirmed.

Then, in November of 2027, the final announcement and confirmation will be made.
