The US and India, the two biggest jobs markets within the sports sector, saw significant declines in sport-related hires between September 2022 and December 2022, and recruitment has not recovered, GlobalData figures have shown.

The data indicated that India has seen the most significant decline over the last twelve months, with recruitment nationwide having decreased from 169,881 in June 2022 to 114,259 in June 2023, a 33% drop.

Meanwhile, the US saw a decline from 954,545 to 818,873 in the same period – a smaller but still significant reduction of 14.2%.

Since December, both nations have experienced a plateau in sports jobs, with India hiring for an average of 117,544 jobs per month in sport and the US for 767,535.

This drop has not impacted the US’ position of largest hirer in sport, with the nation continuing to dominate the field. However, India’s position as the second biggest hirer within sports has come under threat, with the hiring decline reducing the gap between it and the third-biggest hirer, Germany.

Germany hired for a total of 108,274 roles in sport last month (June), only 5,985 fewer than India.

On a global scale, there was a notable decline in hiring between September 2022 and December 2022, including in the UK, Canada and Australia. However, these nations have seen a gradual recovery and look set to continue a general trend of growth.
