Trevor Birch Talks Financial Management at Soccerex
Soccerex are delighted to announce that Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch, will be speaking on the ‘Financial Management of Clubs’ panel at this year’s Soccerex European Forum, 28-29 March , Manchester.
In his capacity as partner of PKF, Trevor was appointed administrator at financially-troubled Portsmouth F.C. at the beginning of February this year to help bring some much-needed stability and to resolve the fiscal issues affecting the club. Birch began his career on the pitch as a player with brief spells for Liverpool, Shrewsbury Town and Chester City, but made an executive move to pursue a future in football finance. After training to be a chartered accountant, Birch became a specialist in insolvency and worked to overhaul the financial situation of many clubs including that of Chelsea where he was appointed chief executive in 2002. Birch helped dissolve the club’s £80 million debt and assisted in the £140m Roman Abramovich takeover during June and July 2003. Trevor can also be credited with helping Leeds United avoid administration, overseeing the takeover of the club by Gerald Krasner’s consortium.
Trevor will join Philip Beard, CEO of Queens Park Rangers, Marco Fassone, Managing Director of SSC Napoli and Dan Jones, Partner at Deloitte, to discuss the future of club finance in UEFA’s new era of Financial Fair Play. The panel will discuss what best practice measures should be adopted and the commercial challenges clubs face in the current economic climate.
‘I am delighted that Trevor will once again be speaking at Soccerex. Given his expertise and in particular his current position at Portsmouth I cannot think of a more apposite addition to our wonderful list of speakers,’ said Duncan Revie, CEO of Soccerex.
The session on financial management is part of a larger conference agenda which also includes sessions on UEFA’s move to centralise media rights, player and coach development, the art of management – a master-class with Rafael Benitez, betting, the tricky business of managing England with Terry Venables, the relationship between football and the media, and the Soccerex Supplement, a session with some of football’s biggest names. There will also be workshops on emerging markets, the stadia industry, commercial opportunities for clubs and the EPFL.
Delegates attending this year’s event will benefit from a packed exhibition showcasing the latest industry products and services. There will also be a series of informal and formal networking opportunities for delegates to maximise the business opportunities available and enjoy the unique atmosphere Soccerex events create.
