Women’s Tennis Association Announces 2002 Calendar

New tournaments, event relocations and new venues highlight the 2002 Sanex WTA Tour event calendar released today. The Tour will bring women’s professional tennis to four new cities and two new countries in 2002. A total of 67 events (up from 63 in 2001), including the four Grand Slams, will be held in 33 countries.

While prize money figures are still being finalized, total prize money in 2002 is expected to exceed $51,000,000; improving on the $50,000,000 in prize money awarded in 2001.

‘The Sanex WTA Tour schedule expanded significantly in 2001; while we also met our goal in shortening the schedule by two weeks,’ said Bart McGuire, Chief Executive Officer, Sanex WTA Tour. ‘We are pleased to see our worldwide reach grow further in 2002 to countries including Finland and Denmark as well as new cities including Memphis, Tennessee; Sarasota, Florida; Brussels, Belgium; Aarhus, Denmark; and Helsinki, Finland.

Notable changes on the 2002 schedule include:

*Antwerp, Belgium (existing event in Nice, France moves to Antwerp for one year)

*Brussels, Belgium (new city, existing event in Knokke Heist moves to Brussels)

*Memphis, Tennessee, USA (new city, existing Oklahoma City event moves to Memphis)

*Sarasota, Florida, USA (new city, new event)

*Helsinki, Finland (new city, new event)
Aarhus, Denmark (new city, new event)

The Sanex WTA Tour also announced changes to the Sanex WTA Ranking System. Tier I events that offer more than the minimum prize money will now offer additional ranking points. Under the revised system, the events at Indian Wells and Miami will now award additional ranking points, raising them above the current Tier I level. In addition, the Tour will create greater differences in ranking points between Tiers I, II and III categories adding greater weight to Grand Slam event results.

‘On the heels of one of the closest races for number one in our history, these changes will reward tournaments that increase their prize money above the required levels while also helping our ranking system to best reflect the performances of the players,’ said Bart McGuire, CEO, Sanex WTA Tour.

The Sanex WTA Tour is the world’s premier professional sport for women. In 2002, more than 1,000 players representing 76 nations will compete for more than $51 million in prize money at 67 events in 33 countries. The Tour’s season concludes with the Sanex Championships at the Olympia Halle in Munich, Germany from October 28 to November 2, 2002.
