The Qatari capital of Doha has been awarded hosting rights for the 2025 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Table Tennis Championships Finals.

The Gulf city came out on top in a vote by ITTF member associations yesterday (December 6), with 57 votes to 39 for the other candidate, Alicante in Spain.

The ITTF has said that the decision “continues Doha’s long-standing association as one of the most established cities in global table tennis.”

The last World Championships Finals were held in the US city of Houston, Texas, last year, and the 2025 edition will be the event’s 59th.

Doha is currently hosting soccer’s FIFA World Cup men's national team tournament, and recent reports have suggested that Qatar is planning to bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics due to the perceived logistical success of the World Cup.

The country will also be hosting the multi-sport Asian Games in 2030.
