Palestine Has No Intention of Boycotts
Reports in the Australian Press that the Palestine was plotting a boycott for the Olympic Games was denied by the country’s official representative Ali Kazak. Rumours had circulated that Palestine had objected to a monument that was unveiled in 1999 at the Sydney Olympic Park in commemoration of the 11 Israeli athletes that were killed during the Munich 1972 Games and that they also were against holding a minute’s silence in memory of the Israeli athletes. If the IOC had agreed to this – they were asking that a minute’s silence was observed for the Palestinian and Arab athletes who also lost their lives. Both the IOC and SOCOG decided remain neutral and to abstain from these requests in view of the delicate situation.
