100 days to Finalise Madrid 2016’s 100 Year Legacy

Madrid, 24 June 2009 – The next 100 days will be used by the Madrid Olympic bid team to help shape a Games for 2016 that will deliver a legacy for the Olympic Movement that could last 100 years, bid leaders said today.

Madrid presented its ‘Games with the human touch’ to the IOC in Lausanne last week and there is now 100 days to go before the final decision on which city will host the Games in 2016.

Madrid 2016 CEO Mercedes Coghen said, “We have demonstrated that our bid is the safest because all the infrastructure is ready, most of the venues are ready, there is huge public support and 100% financial guarantees.

“In the final run up to Copenhagen on 2 October we want to show what Madrid can achieve for athletes and the Olympic Movement as a whole. By that I mean providing a welcoming and enhanced environment where athletes can perform to the best of their ability. By instilling an inclusive and integrated culture, Madrid will not only talk about the Olympic ideals of fairness, friendship and togetherness but also live them. For now, for 2016 and for the next 100 years.”

Madrid’s Legacy Plan has five themes of sport, education, economy, environment and culture, which are being delivered through the Generation 16 program. The plan is living up to its “Actions Not Words” strapline; it has already implemented programs to increase sports participation in people of all ages and to develop an Olympic education program in Spanish schools

Mercedes Coghen continued, “We want the Games in 2016 to be truly the ‘Games with the human touch’ so that in the future everyone will participate in sport and the values of social integration that will inspire generations to come. We hope that the next 100 days can help define Olympism for the next 100 years.”
