Celtic Football Club, the Scottish Premier League Champions, today reports that their pioneering pay-per-view video on demand broadband broadcasts were a great success, with 30% of their broadband subscribers enjoying live coverage of Celtic’s pre-season friendly matches against English Premiership sides Fulham FC, on Friday 20th July, and Sunderland AFC, on Tuesday 24th July.
The broadcast was praised by fans who watched the transmission, reporting that the picture quality was comparable to watching the game on television.
As a result, Celtic have announced that the second leg of their third round Champions League qualifying match against Dutch giants Ajax – taking place at Celtic Park on Wednesday 22nd August – will be the next match to be transmitted live on the official website. The pay-per-view broadcast will again be limited to fans outside the United Kingdom and Ireland, as Celtic look to raise the profile of the club abroad.
Celticfc.net Project Director, Iain Reid commenting on the broadcast said today: ‘This is yet another indication of Celtic FC’s intention of bringing fans live coverage of matches via the clubs official website. The official website is the perfect vehicle for Celtic FC to provide their fans outside the United Kingdom and Ireland with live coverage of Celtic’s games, giving people who might not normally watch the team the opportunity to witness the unique atmosphere of a packed Celtic Park. The game against Ajax on the 22nd August provides us with the ideal occasion to further enhance Celtic’s appeal worldwide.’
Leo Mindel, director of LSsport.com, a division of LS Technologies Ltd, said: ‘We are exceptionally pleased with the results of Celtic’s first video on demand package and are proud to be associated with yet another broadcasting first on Celtic’s official website. This successful venture pioneers the way for future broadcasts and complements Celtic’s strategy of breaking new ground on the Internet. We are delighted that we can develop this obvious potential by including Celtic’s Champions League qualifying game with Ajax; a match that will surely be popular with fans.’
