Canadian Mixed Curling Championship Awarded to Prince Albert

Prince Albert, SK, May 17, 2004 – The 2005 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship will be held in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, it was announced today by the Canadian Curling Association (CCA).

The 2005 Canadian Mixed will actually be played later this year, November 21-28, at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club. It will mark the second time that Prince Albert has staged this championship and the sixth time that Saskatchewan has hosted the Mixed. It was previously contested in Saskatoon in 1978, Prince Albert in 1984, Swift Current in 1993, Kindersley in 1997 and Weyburn in 2001.

‘The Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club has hosted many national and provincial spiels in the past. In addition to the 1984 Canadian Mixed and 1987 Canadian Juniors, we have also hosted the 2003 Provincial Men’s championship, the Grand Slam and the 2004 Provincial Intermediate Ladies. The Club is looking forward to staging the 2005 Canadian Mixed and with our past experience, we assure everyone that this will be a very successful and enjoyable event,’ said Phil England, Host Committee Chairman.

Saskatchewan shares the lead with Alberta for most Mixed winsŠeight, since the championship began in Toronto in 1964. The province’s most recent winner was Randy Bryden in 1996 in Charlottetown. Other national champions are Larry McGrath, the only three-time Mixed-winning skip (1967, 1968, 1971), Rick Folk (1974, 1983), Bernie Yuzdepski (1978) and Randy Woytowich (1984).

The 2004 Canadian Mixed was held at the McIntyre Curling Club in Schumacher, Ontario in January and was won by Alberta’s Shannon Kleibrink, who became the first female skip to win the Canadian championship.

The field for the 42nd edition of The Mixed has already been confirmed and includes two-time (1999, 2003) Mixed champion skip Paul Flemming of Halifax, Nova Scotia, 2004 Mixed third place finisher Terry McNamee of Brandon, Manitoba and 2001 world junior champion Mark Nichols of St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Former provincial junior champion Kyle George will skip the host province while two female skips, veteran Scott Tournament of Hearts competitor Kim Dolan of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and Eve Bélisle of Lachine, Quebec will also compete.
