Candidature of Rio de Janeiro for the 2007 Pan American Games
Candidature of Rio de Janeiro for the 2007 Pan American Games
The City of Rio de Janeiro has already started an in-depth project which will set the city in high priority to contend for the hosting of the 2007 Pan American Games and a series of other world level championships and even an Olympic candidature. It may seem quite distant, however victorious bid experiences have proven how important it is for a city to be well and adequately prepared to compete with real chances to host world level sports events.
I can affirm that the candidature of Rio de Janeiro will accomplish all the requisites needed for the bidding of a host city for the Pan American Games of 2007. It is a long-term job which requires political will, planning and action. In the case of the candidature of Rio de Janeiro, the COB (Brazilian Olympic Committee) is counting with the support of all three spheres of governmental power, federal, state and municipal. Aside from the political
aspect, the organizational skills Brazil has shown will be fundamental for the candidature planning. The XII General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees, held recently in Rio de Janeiro, was a demonstration of what the city and the COB can do in favor of sports and
world level organization.
Rio de Janeiro is a city with a great sports vocation and hosting the Pan American Games here is every Brazilian citizen’s dream. Brazil has already successfully hosted the 3rd edition of the Pan American Games in 1963 in Sao Paulo with a good 1665 athletes in attendance at that time. uring the XII ANOC Assembly, the President of the Republic, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, elected Rio de Janeiro as the Olympic City of Brazil. Aside from being the country’s post card, Rio de Janeiro has the natural conditions that favor
the organization of high level summer sport competitions. However, there are stages to be followed. The Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Rio de Janeiro City Government together are developing a strategic plan for the Pan
American Games to be implemented in accordance with the city’s own special plan which covers the most different aspects of city planning such as habitation, transportation, telecommunications, etc. The strategic plan will consider the sport venues, the games Village and also a study on the integration of these constructions to the city life.
Another important point to be taken into account in Rio de Janeiro’s run towards the 2007 Pan American Games is the city’s candidature to host a series of major world sport events such as the 2005 XI FINA World Championships, the 2005 Judo World Championships, the 2005 Canoe World Championships, the 2006 World Equestrian Games and the 2007 IAAF World Championships. The COB is firmly convinced these bids will not be in vain.
