The Irish, Scottish and Welsh Rugby Unions were disappointed by a report in today’s Daily Telegraph which was headlined ‘Welsh may scupper Celtic League.’ Much of the report was inaccurate though for reasons of confidentiality we cannot go into points of detail at this stage.

Talks on the creation of a Celtic League – involving teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales -are at a very advanced stage and there is understandable media speculation. What we can stress however is that none of the Unions in these talks is ‘contemplating a U-turn,’ as the report suggested.

The three Unions are working closely together in order to bring to fruition a competition which will have long-lasting benefits for rugby in the Celtic Nations.

There is a sincere willingness among all participants to deliver this competition and an announcement will be made as soon as possible.
