CGU Insurance Invests in the Future of British Athletics

CGU Insurance is today unveiled as the ‘White Knight’ sponsor for British athletics. CGU and the sport’s governing body, UK Athletics are announcing a new four year, £10 million sponsorship package for the sport. The biggest sponsorship deal in the history of the athletics in Britain, the CGU athletics campaign, ‘from grass roots to glory’, will secure the financial future of the sport in the build up to the Sydney Olympics and beyond the Millennium.

CGU will provide the headline sponsorship for all the major UK indoor and outdoor meetings. The size of CGU’s investment will transform the quality and prestige of the major British athletics meetings placing them amongst the finest and most lucrative in the world. The highest prize structure ever offered to athletes co-operating in the UK has been announced for this Sunday’s CGU Gateshead Classic and the CGU British Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on Sunday 7th August. This has already helped attract the very best athletes in the world to the UK, such as IAAF Male and Female World Athletes of the Year, Haile Gebreselassie and Marion Jones.

However, CGU athletics campaign is not just about supporting the top echelons of the Sport. A minimum of 20% of the sponsorship will be invested in grassroots initiatives. CGU’s investment is one of the most comprehensive packages ever associated with British athletics and will include:

The Title sponsorship of all major domestic televised meetings
The Title sponsorship of the GB Senior Team
The Sponsorship o GB junior team and under 23 Teams
The Title sponsorship of the CGU Startrack ‘come and try’ athletics scheme run in the summer holidays for children
The Title sponsorship of the winter CGU ‘Sports Hall’ athletics scheme for under-15’s
The Sponsorship and development of a new Athletics National Awards Scheme
