The cricket world today acknowledged the overwhelming support provided by almost 100 companies and organisations for their contribution toward staging the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal match.
A total of 97 organisations will be formally acknowledged with a “thank you” advertisement to appear in the Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne tomorrow.
The organisations combined to donate their services, products, staffing, resources and/or waived fees – most of which would normally serve as expenses in staging an international cricket match.
The “thank you” advertisement has been placed on behalf of match organisers the International Cricket Council, Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria, the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association.
Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the support provided at all levels within the Australian community was outstanding.
“We are completely overwhelmed by the level of support received in staging the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal match,” said Mr Sutherland.
“The Australian public is one party that deserves a special mention for their support through attendance, by watching Channel Nine’s telecast, through donations, and for helping create a wonderful atmosphere around the game.
“At an operational level, there is enormous work involved in staging an international cricket match, and to do so in such a short space of time was quite an achievement.
“A total of 97 organisations – from large scale corporate sectors to local family businesses – chipped in through various means to help stage the match.
“All those organisations donated their services, products, staff, time or waived fees. Most of these operations would normally constitute an expense in staging a match, and that’s one of the reasons we were able to raise such a substantial figure for the Tsunami Appeal.
“Hundreds of people donated their time, including volunteers who staffed the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the match – that type of support shows how much this game meant.
“On behalf of the cricket community, we want to formally thank those parties for their generosity and goodwill.”
The World Cricket Tsunami Appeal match raised over AUS $14.6 million for World Vision.
A more accurate figure will be known in the next few days after the internet memorabilia auction on eBay is finalised. However, a final amount will not be available until an audit is completed in the coming month.
A number of organisations provided their support, but requested that their contribution not be publicly acknowledged.
