Fifa Happy With Athens 2004 Soccer Stadium

With a vist to Patras, the FIFA delegation today continued its tour of the Olympic cities which will host the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games football matches.

FIFA Vice-President and Head of the Olympic Football Tournament, Mr Issa Hayatou, and the officials of the International Federation were given a tour of the Pampeloponnisiako Stadium work site by the ATHENS 2004 Football Competition Manager Patrick Comninos, and the responsible project engineers G. Vasiliou and K. Vainaki. Apart from the Pampeloponnisiako Stadium, the FIFA delegation also had the opportunity to visit the Panachaiki ground and the Patras University training sites. They were briefed at length on the course of the works underway and determined their progress. The Pampeloponnisiako Stadium, with a 20,000-spectator capacity, will be ready in March 2004.

Mr Walter Gagg, the FIFA Manager for Stadiums, stated the following on behalf of Mr Hayatou:
‘It is Mr Havatou’s second visit Patras and this football ground. The first time was two years ago, before the works began. However, this time construction has progressed a lot and we are very satisfied with the situation we saw today. We were informed by those responsible at the General Secretariat of Sport that 40% of the project has already been built. Despite this, a lot of work is still needed so that it can be ready in March 2004. We are totally confident that the time table will be observed in full and that both the football ground and the city of Patras will cover the needs of the Olympic Football Tournament in the best way’

Prior to leaving Patras, the FIFA delegation attended a luncheon given in the honour of its members, where those present included the Prefect of Achaia Mr Dimitris Katsikopoulos, the Deputy Mayor of Patras Mr Giorgos Lazaris, the President of EPSA Mr Giorgos Tseklenis and the General Secretary of EPSA Mr Giorgos Spyroulias.
