FISU EC Attributes Four More WUC for 2008

At the FISU Executive Committee Meeting in Brussels, Belgium, the FISU EC attributed four more World University Championships for 2008, bringing the total number to 18 so far. The newly attributed championships are Cycling, Floorball, Taekwondo and Triathlon.

Cycling
The 2008 WUC Cycling was attributed to the city of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. After the medal rush (7 of which 4 gold) at the 2006 WUC Cycling in Belgium, the Dutch got a taste for more and want to win gold as well as an organizer. Jetske Robeer, President of the NUSF and Casper Smeets, President of the Dutch Student Cycling Federation presented the bid at the FISU EC in Brussels. The WUC fits in with a triple celebration for Nijmegen, i.e. the 85th anniversary of Radboud University, the 50th anniversary of the Nijmegen Student Sports Council and the 5th anniversary of the Nijmegen Student Cycling Club. Having already 17 partners on board, the OC will stage four disciplines: time trial, road race, cyclo-cross and mountain biking. Nijmegen also boasts the first Dutch permanent mountain bike track. Other candidate for the 2008 WUC Cycling was Bangkok, Thailand.

Floorball

The 3rd WUC Floorball has been attributed to the city of Kuortane, Finland. The last WUC in Finland was staged in 1996 and according to the OC delegates a time too long ago. The Suomi are the reigning WUC Champions as they took the gold medal in 2002 at the inaugural edition of this WUC in Göteborg, Sweden. For the first time they want to involve a women’s competition in the tournament. One of the supporters of the bid was Tapio Korjus, a former Olympic javelin champion (gold, Seoul 1988) and former participant of the 1987 Zagreb Summer Universiade. The WUC will be staged at the IAAF accredited Kuortane Sports Institute, a huge sport complex with indoor and outdoor track and field facilities, an ice arena, various indoor facilities, gyms and training facilities, golf course etc.

Taekwondo
The 10th WUC Taekwondo has been accredited to the 2009 Summer Universiade host in Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro. The WUC will be organized in the Sports Hall ‘Pionir’ where the 2004 WUC Karate was staged. The OC plans this WUC as a test event for Taekwondo at the 2009 Belgrade SU. The FISU EC was won for the idea of a test event. Other bidding cities were Nyíregyháza, Hungary and Poznan, Poland.

Triathlon
The 2008 WUC Triathlon was attributed to the city of Erdek, Turkey. Erdek is located close to Istanbul. Erdek is a Triathlon-crazy city as the Turkish Triathlon Federation organised six times the national championship there, as well as three editions of the Etu Prestige Race, an International Triathlon Championship, and the 2006 Erdek ITU European Cup.

FISU Patronage
A FISU Patronage was given to four student sporting events, i.e. the 2007 Student Rugby World Cup in Stellenbosch, South Africa; the 2006 International University Shooting Championship in Pilzen, Czech Republic; the Master U BNP Paribas Challenge International de Tennis Universitaire, Ile Marante, France and ‘SportFest’, an international student sports week in Bosphorus, Turkey.
