Golf’s Ladies European Tour Adds Extra Event

(London, August 30 2001) The Evian Ladies European Tour are pleased to confirm an additional event to the 2001 season, the Biarritz Ladies Classic, held between September 27-29 at Biarritz Le Phare GC in the Basque region of
southern France.

The Tournament boasts a prizefund of £100,000 with a first prize of £15,000 and will be the final counting event for the order of merit on the 2001 schedule, which should make the close run Rookie of the year battle interesting.

Most of the top players of the Tour have already confirmed to play in this, the 16th event of a successful year in European Ladies golf.

Order of Merit winner Raquel Carriedo from Spain will be gunning for her fourth win of an outstanding year, while compatriot Paula Marti will be battling it out with Norway’s Suzann Pettersen and Karine Icher from France
for the Bill Johnson Rookie of the year award.

Pettersen leads the race by 1526 points over Icher, with Marti, winner twice this year on Tour, just 29 points further adrift. With a total of 3000 points up for grabs in the final two qualifying events, the battle for the
top new comer should provide a thrilling finale to what has already been termed the ‘Year of the Rookie’.

Also confirmed are other top French players, Marine Monnet, Marie Laure de Lorenzi, and a welcome return to Tour golf from Bayonne’s Sandrine Mendiburu, who gave birth to her son Hugo earlier in the year, and who will tee it up for just the second time this season.

‘We are delighted to announce a return to Biarritz after a such a successful event in 1999. It’s a popular event for everyone on Tour with its historical golf course within a fantastic location,’ said Tim Howland, chief executive
of the Evian Ladies European Tour.

‘I would like to extend my thanks to the Biarritz City council and Franck Riboud from Evian, amongst many other people, for supporting the event.

‘The fact that we have been able to secure another venue before the 2001 season closes is proof that there is a strengthening interest in the women’s game across Europe.

‘With the likes of Marie Laure de Lorenzi, Karine Icher and Marine Monnet helping to develop Ladies golf in France, I expect to see this interest continue over the next few seasons.’
