Illingworth Wins in Spain
Great Britain’s Matt Illingworth has won the first stage of the “Cinturon Ciclista a Mallorca” in Spain. Riding for the World Class Performance Plan track endurance team, Matt won the sprint after a break of five riders managed to get almost a minute clear of the main field. Following strong performances in the previous day’s Prologue Time Trial, Matt and team-mate Bradley Wiggins now lie second and fourth overall on the general classification. The remainder of the six-man GB team are also well placed and the team is currently lying in second place overall. The team are riding the 2.6 UCI classification stage race as part of their preparation for the Olympic games, later this year. All six riders on the team are exclusively targeting Track events at the Olympics. Between them they make up the core of the squad vying for places on the four man Team Pursuit team. Rob Hayles is also targeting the Individual Pursuit, Points Race and Madison, which he may well ride with Bradley Wiggins. Others in contention for places in the endurance Track team include former Pursuit World Champion Colin Sturgess and Chris Newton. The GB Team is managed by WCPP Track Endurance Coach Simon Jones. The British Cycling Federation’s Cycling World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) is funded by the National Lottery.
