Intelsat Launches New Communications Satellite
Washington D.C., 30 August 2001 – Intelsat announced today that at 2:46 am EDT the Intelsat 902 communications satellite was successfully launched aboard an Ariane 44L launch vehicle.
The Intelsat 902 is the second launch in an aggressive campaign to allow Intelsat to meet customers’ capacity needs. The satellite will be deployed at 62ºE over the Indian Ocean region, and offers broadcast, Internet,
carrier and corporate network services on its 72 C-band and 22 Ku-band transponders. The Intelsat 902 satellite will replace the Intelsat 602 and will provide enhanced power, coverage area and capacity. Additionally, the 902 will provide high-power, Ku-band spot beam coverage for Europe and the Middle East and more C-band capacity to the Indian Ocean region. With advanced features like selectable split uplink for SNG, the Intelsat 902 is ideal for DTH and Internet usage, as well as other telecommunications needs.
Intelsat CEO Conny Kullman stated, ‘The successful launch of the 902 represents a win – win situation for us and our customers in the Indian Ocean Region and Europe. They will now have access to one of the most powerful satellites in orbit.’
The Intelsat 602 will be relocated to a new role at 33ºE in the Indian Ocean Region, further expanding satellite coverage of that region.
The next launch in Intelsat’s campaign, the Intelsat 903, is scheduled for November 2001 using a Proton K/Block DM launch vehicle from Russia. The launch site will be the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
