Microsoft to Sponsor UK Athletics in Commonwealth Games Build-up
The countdown to the Commonwealth Games has begun. Today Microsoft Ltd announces its sponsorship of UK Athletics’ televised events in the build up to the Commonwealth Games. The series of events begins with the Norwich Union Indoor Trials and AAA Championships, to be held in Cardiff
on the 2nd and 3rd of February – at which Britain’s top athletes battle for selection ahead of the European Indoor Championships in Vienna in early March.
The final event of Microsoft’s sponsorship is the Aqua-Pura Commonwealth Trials, to be held on 15th and 16th June – the first use of the brand new City of Manchester Stadium ahead of the Games themselves.
The Manchester trials will be crunch time for England’s athletes as the Games selections are finalised. Media and sports fans will not only enjoy first class athletics but also gain a flavour of Manchester’s fantastic facilities which will soon be on the world stage. It will be crunch time for Microsoft also, as it is the first live test of the Microsoft platform built for the Commonwealth Games.
Commenting on the announcement Microsoft Ltd’s Managing Director, Neil Holloway, says:
‘The countdown to the Commonwealth Games 2002 is a tremendously exciting time for everyone involved in UK sport. Microsoft is delighted to sponsor these prestigious athletics events – including the very first time the new City of Manchester Stadium will be used as a major athletics event.
Microsoft is proud to be backing Manchester 2002 with a state of the art unifying technology platform for the Games; technology that will be fast, fun and fantastic – rather like the athletics we are supporting this season! We wish everyone the very best of luck’
Microsoft Ltd is the exclusive software sponsor of the XVIIth Commonwealth Games, to be held in Manchester this summer. It is providing software solutions and consultancy, based on its .NET technology vision, to ensure a robust technology platform from which the Games will operate.
