New CEO For Victorian Major Events Company
Sir Rod Eddington, Chairman of the Victorian Major Events Company (VMEC), today announced the appointment of Brendan McClements as Chief Executive Officer at VMEC, the world’s most successful event acquisition company.
Brendan’s experience comes from an extensive career in sports administration, both in Australia and overseas.
Sir Rod said “Brendan brings a wealth of experience to this important position and he has already proved himself as a valuable part of the VMEC team in his previous role as General Manager – Events.
“VMEC has a strong future under Brendan’s leadership with the calendar of events becoming increasingly diverse and long term strategies rolling out.” said Sir Rod.
Premier John Brumby endorsed the appointment saying “Victoria is recognised as a leader in major events with an impressive calendar of events right across our State. I am confident Brendan will help drive our strategy and maximise the benefits that major events bring to Victoria.”
Mr McClements thanked the Premier and Sir Rod and is delighted to be given the opportunity to lead such a dynamic organisation.
“I look forward to continuing the outstanding work put in place by my predecessor, Peter Abraam, and further developing Victoria’s major events to ensure that Melbourne remains the events capital of the world.”
Tim Holding, Minister for Tourism and Major Events supported the appointment and added “We have just announced some important events for Victoria, including the 2011 Presidents Cup and the 2010 UCI Road World Cycling Championships. With increasing competition from around the world, the future of major events in this State is going from strength to strength.”
Background information on Brendan McClements:
After initially beginning his career in Human Resources, Mr McClements moved into Public Affairs and Communications consultancy in 1991 joining the world’s largest Public Affairs firm, Hill and Knowlton, in its Melbourne office. Over the next 7 years he built a career in the business and sporting world with senior roles in the brewing, financial services and sporting industries.
In 1999 Mr McClements focussed on his interest in sport and joined the then Australian Cricket Board’s Senior Executive Team as General Manager – Public Affairs where he spent the next four years building the Public Affairs function within cricket leading the ACB’s response to a diverse range of issues including corruption and blackmail and helping to drive the organisation’s commercial activities in the areas of new media rights, the emergence of sports betting and major sponsorship negotiations.
In 2002 he was recruited by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in London into the ICC’s executive team as General Manger – Corporate Affairs and spent four years working in London and Dubai with the ICC where he managed the Corporate Affairs and Strategy functions as well as being part of the organisation’s leadership group that was responsible for delivering some of the world’s biggest sports events including the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa which remains the most successful Cricket World Cup in history.
After returning to Australia for family reasons in 2006 Mr McClements joined VMEC in January 2007 as the General Manager – Events to help strengthen the organisation’s senior management team and further cement Victoria’s reputation as one of the strongest participants in the major events industry.
