Argentina has launched its first-ever bid for a men's Rugby World Cup (RWC), with the nation looking to host the 2035 edition.

The Argentina Rugby Union (UAR) officially unveiled its plans to put its hat in the ring to stage the 2035 RWC, with the bid to potentially include Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile.

Argentina has never hosted a RWC, which began in 1987 and has taken in 10 editions so far.

Other likely bidders include Spain, Italy, Japan, as well as a possible joint submission from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

The host nation or nations for the 13th edition of the tournament will be appointed in November 2027, the World Rugby governing body confirmed late last year.

In September, it officially launched the process through which nations could bid to host the 2035 RWC.

At its general assembly in London, World Rugby said that preferred hosts would be chosen in May 2027.

The 2027 RWC will take place in Australia, with the emerging rugby union market of the US set to host the 2031 tournament, which will see the RWC take place in the Americas for the first time.

The UAR has now said: "As part of the strategic strengthening of regional rugby, the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) is moving forward with its official bid to host the 2035 Rugby World Cup.

“This project is led by Argentina for the entire region and is being developed in conjunction with Sudamérica Rugby to integrate the unions of Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, consolidating a proposal that reflects the development of South American rugby."

Moving forward, the bid organizers will go through a 'working session' with Alan Gilpin, chief executive at World Rugby.

Gabriel Travaglini, president of the UAR, commented: "The 2035 bid represents a federal objective and a legacy project that transcends our borders. Welcoming Alan Gilpin to advance this technical analysis is a fundamental step in demonstrating that the region is ready.

“We want a World Cup that reflects the passion and development that rugby has achieved in every corner of our territory.”

Argentina's national team have reached the semi-finals of the RWC three times so far, in 2007, 2015, and 2023, but no games from that tournament have ever taken place in South America.

For national men's team home games, a handful of multi-purpose stadia in the country – including in Cordoba, San Juan, and Santiago del Estero, are currently used.

In terms of future RWC organization, early November saw World Rugby unveil that 27 host cities and areas in the US had applied to stage games from the 2031 tournament.
