Paralympic Family Celebrates Japan’s Commitment to the Paralympic Movement in Beijing

Tokyo, September 15, 2008 – The Japan Paralympic Committee, one of the organizers of the Tokyo 2009 Asian Para Youth Games, held a reception on Saturday, September 13, 2008 in Beijing for members of the various National Paralympic Committees, who are in China for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. The Asian Para Youth Games, the successor event to the FESPIC Youth Games inaugurated in Hong Kong in 2003, will be held in Tokyo in September 2009. This time, however, the size of the Games will be greater than before, as with the set-up of the Asian Paralympic Committee in 2006, the National Paralympic Committees of Oceania have left the Games, but the National Paralympic Committees of West Asia have joined it.

Japan, one of the leading countries of Asia, has the important role of organizing the Games for
the young generation and through it increasing the strength of the Paralympic Movement in Asia. Taking the opportunity of next years Games, it is expected that the Paralympic Movement will further strengthen in Asia.
At the reception on September 13, high-level representatives from the International Paralympic Committee, International Federations, the Asian Paralympic Committee and National Paralympic Committees from Asia showed their support and expressed their best wishes for next year’s Asia Para Youth Games.

Isao Hokugo, President of the Japanese Paralympic Committee and head of the Tokyo 2009 Asian Youth Para Games Organizing Committee said at the reception:
“First I would like to thank BOCOG for its great work organizing the Beijing 2008 Paralympics Games.

“Next year, it will be Japan’s honour to host the Asian Youth Para Games, an event that is gathering the attention of Paralympic National Committees from around the world, and I believe that the Beijing Games will be a great example for us.

“We will strive to create an opportunity for all young Paralympians from around Asia to be able to participate in the Asian Youth Para Games and through this event to strengthen further the Paralympic Movement in our region.”

The first Asian Youth Para Games will be held next year in Tokyo between September 11 and 13.
