– Olympic Games Would Benefit Whole of UK, Says Tony Blair

London: The Prime Minister Tony Blair today took time out from his election campaign to become the first person to sign a British Airways Boeing 747 in support of London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Over the next ten weeks, the British Airways aircraft will be transformed into a flying petition, collecting the signatures of celebrities, passengers and airline staff who proudly “Back the Bid”.

The airline, a Premier Partner of the London 2012 bid, hopes to collect over 100,000 signatures as part of its ‘sign the plane’ initiative.  These signatures will be placed on the aircraft that carries the bid team to Singapore for the crucial decision vote on July 6.

The Prime Minister was joined at Heathrow by London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe and double Olympic gold medallist rower, James Cracknell.

“I am delighted to put the first signature on the British Airways 747.  This is a fantastic opportunity for the British public to get behind the London 2012 Olympic bid.

“Bringing the Games to the UK would benefit the whole country enhancing the lives of millions and bringing thousands of visitors to the capital from around the world.

Martin Broughton, British Airways’ chairman said:

“We are honoured to have the Prime Minister’s support as we kick off our ‘sign the plane’ initiative.  As a Premier Partner, we are proud to give our support to the London 2012 team in their bid to bring the Games to London.”

Sebastian Coe, London 2012 chairman added:

“We are extremely excited about the British Airways ‘Sign the Plane’ initiative which provides the public with a unique way of registering their support.  Everyone can make a difference by signing up to our campaign.

“As we count down to the final decision in July it is important that everyone in Britain can show their support for what would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to bring the Games here in 2012.
