PUMA unveils the first phase of its new 2002 World Cup campaign. Reflecting the culture of the hosting countries of the 2002 World Cup, Japan and Korea, PUMA focused their advertising campaign around the art of Japanamation.

The first of two television commercials will focus on the Cameroon National Team and kicks off PUMA’s 2002 campaign on a pan-European basis on MTV, starting September 20th 2001. The new Cameroon campaign, titled ‘Indomitable Lions,’ was conceptualized by PUMA and their creative agency, Gyro Worldwide, utilizing the animation talent of Toronto based Red Rover.

The commercial and print campaign depicts the defending Olympic Champions and 2000 African Cup of Nations Champions as fierce competitors on their quest to World Cup victory. As the first team to qualify for the World Cup, Cameroon is still viewed as one of the dark horses entering the tournament. PUMA looks to build support for the African statement team and expand their fan base with the global exposure of the 2001-2002 advertising campaign.

Debuting in France this September, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Japan will roll out the commercial in the following months. Expect to see the ‘Indomitable Lions’ print campaign hit newsstands worldwide beginning this November in vertical soccer, sports and men’s general interest publications.

Highlighted in the campaign is Samuel Eto’o, Cameroon’s rising star striker who transferred from Real Madrid to another Spanish UEFA Champions League contender Real Mallorca in the summer. The commercial also draws attention to the Icana, one of two new technically innovative soccer boots to be launched by PUMA in 2002. The much anticipated Cellerator Shudoh will launch in April 2002, just prior to the start of the World Cup. This new exciting product, with all its integrated performance enhancing and groundbreaking technologies, is bound to set a new benchmark in soccer footwear.

Following the announcement of all the World Cup qualifiers, PUMA, in collaboration with their creative teams, will create a second television commercial and print advertising campaign to support their statement soccer players. Both campaigns will run throughout the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
