Report: 77 per cent of Europeans Watch Sport on TV

Two recent reports published by Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd have shown that 52% of Europeans participated in sport within the last 12 months and 77% watched sport on television.

The most avid sportsmen in terms of frequency of participation are found on the football field, however, only three quarters of footballers take part in any other sport compared with nearly 90% of tennis players.

Profiling of sports participants and fans reveals many differences across key European markets. For example, the skiing television audience is equally divided between men and women in France, Germany, Spain and the UK, but in Italy nearly three quarters of viewers are male.

The 2001 European Sports Participation Report and the 2001 European Sports Fanbase Report provide the most comprehensive insight into the sports Europeans participate in and the sports they watch on television. Uniquely, a consistent approach to data collection and stringent definitions of what constitutes a ‘sports participant’ and a ‘sports fan’ ensure that all data is directly comparable across all markets.
