Salzburg 2014 Sports Venues Fit for the Olympics
The seven Olympic winter sports federations (FIS, FIL, ISU, IBU, WCF, FIBT and IIHF*) all confirmed in writing this week that the sports venues that form part of the Salzburg bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 meet the high technical standards required for hosting the Winter Games.
This confirmation from the federations is a required element of the bid document that must be submitted to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne by all three candidate cities by 10 January 2007. The sports venue concept of the Salzburg bid for the Winter Games in 2014 stands out particularly because 8 of the 11 venues already exist and various World Cup events have already been successfully staged at many of them.
Gernot Leitner, Games Plan Director, was very pleased with the good report given to the sports venues by the federations, saying, “This extremely positive assessment by the international federations is very valuable because it mainly refers to the facilities that are already in existence.
We also received very positive feedback from the federations about the short distances between the planned Olympic village and media centre and the venues. The close proximity to other accommodation facilities was also rated highly.”
The focus of the assessments was on examining adherence to the general conditions specific to each sport and on the competition schedule. In addition, Ski Cross, which will be a new Olympic sport from 2010, has already been taken into consideration from a technical viewpoint and could be held in Salzburg without any problems.
