The Japanese city of Kobe is to host the Para Athletics World Championships in 2024 after the multi-sport event was postponed in 2021 when it was due to be staged there.

Kobe’s Universiade Memorial Stadium will host the rearranged edition of the ordinarily biennial event between May 17 and 25, 2024.

Before that, the French capital of Paris will host the 2023 edition of the event from July 8 to 17 next year.

As a result, Paris will become the 10th edition of the World Championships and Kobe the 11th, having previously been the other way around.

The World Para Athletics subcommittee of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) governing body and the Kobe Local Organising Committee (LOC) announced in January that the rearranged 2021 edition would not take place in 2022 due to “foreseeable restrictions” with hosting the event in Japan.

Since the beginning of this year, the country has been dealing with its biggest outbreak of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Nearly 1,300 athletes from 100 countries are expected to compete in Kobe.

Dubai in the United Arab Emirates hosted the last edition of the World Championships in 2019.

Christian Holtz, managing director of world para sports at the IPC, said: “We have worked closely with the Kobe LOC in order to retain the World Championships within the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games cycle. This is an important milestone for the sport as it will be the first time the competition will be held in Japan, marking an important legacy event from the Tokyo 2020 Games.”

Akemi Masuda, chairperson of the Kobe LOC, added: “At last, the new dates for the Kobe Para Athletics World Championships have been set. Amazing athletes from all over the world will gather in the international city of Kobe, and at the Universiade Memorial Stadium …

“It is my hope that the pandemic will soon come to an end, and that athletes, media, and spectators from all over the world can come to visit us. I also hope that people from around the world will enjoy specialties like Kobe beef, delicious sweets, and the Arima hot springs. For the two years that the Championships is postponed, we will continue to spread the appeal of the inclusive international city of Kobe. I hope you will join us in cheering on the championships.”
