DAZN, the international sports streaming service, has become the latest and arguably most significant broadcaster to acquire rights for the inaugural season of the eSkootr Championship (eSC), the international electric race scooter series debuting this year.

Through a non-exclusive deal announced today (May 13), DAZN will broadcast live all six events of the eSC’s inaugural season in over 200 countries and territories (excluding Australia and Brazil), starting with the opening event in London tomorrow (May 14).

The subsequent rounds of the series take place in Switzerland, France, Spain, Italy, and the US, where it concludes in October.

DAZN is the latest – and has by far the largest reach – of a swathe of broadcasters that have signed up to show the eSC, including the BeIN Media Group international pay-TV broadcaster and the Saudi-owned MBC Group media company, which have deals covering 34 and 24 countries, respectively, in the Middle East and North Africa (and parts of Asia also for BeIN).

Elsewhere, eSC has struck deals for coverage on the Claro Sports and Marca Claro channels in 18 countries across Latin America and on the Fox Sports pay-TV operator in Australia.

There are other agreements in place with W Sport (international, but currently Sub-Saharan Africa), ABola (Portugal), MadCo (Spain), WedoTV (Austria, Switzerland, and Germany), Charlton (Israel), Network 4 (Hungary), ProTV (Romania), and Best4 Sport (Latvia).

Various broadcasters are using eSC’s own programming created by Canadian production company Boombox for their coverage, which includes pre-race build-up, live race commentary, post-race interviews, highlights, and analysis.

The series is said to be both inspired by and in part an effort to accelerate the use of micro-mobility solutions in cities.

The 2022 season will be contested by 30 riders – both male and female – spread across 10 teams competing on what is described as the “fastest e-scooter in the world”, with a top speed of over 100kph and “Formula 1-style tech”.

Tom Burrows, executive vice president of rights at DAZN, said: “Bringing the eSkootr Championship to our platform on a global scale underlines our commitment to making a broad range of sport more accessible to an ever-increasing number of fans. This is set to be an exhilarating racing season and we can’t wait to get it started.”

Sharon Fuller, chief content officer at eSC, added: “eSC is a global championship with races around the world and riders coming from four different continents, so it is important for us to ensure we are visible in multiple territories.

“DAZN, as one of the world’s biggest sport broadcasters, will make all of our 2022 events available in close to 270 countries, helping us reach and engage with a truly global fanbase.”
