Finnish national team rights to return to YLE from 2022
YLE, the public-service broadcaster in Finland, has secured rights to all matches played by the national soccer team to 2028 in an extensive agreement that covers two editions of the Uefa European Championships.
In a deal with Uefa and its CAA Eleven agency, YLE will show Finland's qualifying matches for Euro 2024, Euro 2028 and the 2026 Fifa World Cup, as well as its matches in the Uefa Nations League and all friendly internationals.
The contract also covers the finals of Euro 2024, in Germany, and Euro 2028, the host of which has yet to be assigned.
The package of Uefa qualifiers and Nations League games not involving Finland have yet to be sold in the country.
Rikku Saaranlumoa, head of sports rights at YLE, said: "I am very happy to be able to offer the men's national team a long-term home and also extend our fine suite of broadcasting major competitions in a sport that is constantly growing in Finland. This is also a sign that Uefa trusts us."
Guy-Laurent Epstein, director of marketing at Uefa Events, added: "We are very happy that the collaboration with YLE continues. YLE has long been a partner for Uefa with a broad competence and a lot of experience in broadcasting football."
The deal marks a return of the Finnish national team to YLE, after Nordic Entertainment Group, the regional media giant, acquired exclusive rights in the country to the qualifiers for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup from 2018-19.
That meant YLE missed out on covering Finland's qualification for Euro 2020, now delayed to 2021, which will represent the country's first appearance at a major tournament, albeit the public broadcaster does hold rights to both the finals and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In recent weeks, Uefa and CAA have completed the sales process in Norway and Denmark for competitions from 2022 to 2028, striking deals with TV2, the commercial broadcasters in both countries. Public-service broadcasters NRK in Norway and DR in Denmark have sub-licensed a package of rights to Euro 2024 and Euro 2028.
In Sweden, rights to the two European Championships have yet to be awarded, but NENT did land the contract for Sweden's Euros and World Cup qualifiers, as well as matches in the Nations League and friendlies to 2028.
