LaLiga the first user of Mediapro-IBM AI highlights solution
Mediapro, the Spanish sports rights and production agency, has launched AIProclips, an online platform powered by artificial intelligence, which generates customised highlights of soccer matches.
Devised in partnership with computer technology giant IBM and with the support of Thuuz Sports, the US automated video production company, the service will be offered to rights-holders, broadcasters and media companies looking to enhance their output to viewers.
AIProclips has been in the pipeline for over a year, with tests carried out in hundreds of games in the current LaLiga season.
Mediapro is the long-term production partner of the Spanish league, which has been confirmed as the first user of the new platform.
AIProclips is based on a combination of three layers of algorithms fine-tuned by a team of experts at IBM and able to select the key moments of a match, including goals and near-misses, to feature in personalised highlights.
Mediapro said it "opens the door to great potential for TV channels and the media to generate highlights which are tailored to their specific markets and audiences."
The company drew on the expertise of California-based Thuuz, which has developed similar solutions for media and technology companies and leagues.
AIProclips is a real-time cloud-based platform which users can connect to from anywhere at anytime, including during a match itself, with the customised highlights delivered in around seven minutes.
In addition to specific games, users can access clips from a matchweek or entire season, and focus on individual players, nationalities and specific types of play (for example fouls).
María Carmen Fernández, head of innovation and new business for Mediapro, said: “Artificial intelligence offers us immense opportunity to optimise production processes but it also opens the door for the development of a huge number of new products aimed at responding to the needs of the hyper segmentation of audiences and the design of customised solutions, such as AIProclips.
“At Mediapro we are committed to innovation and we are sure of the need to continue incorporating new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and algorithmic development, combining these with the talent and wealth of experience of our experts to continue responding to an increasingly demanding market in terms of personalisation and interactivity with content.”
LaLiga's commitment to technology has been further reinforced today with the announcement of official certifications for more than 20 of its projects.
The league said the awards from the Certification Agency for Spanish Innovation (ACIE) and European Quality Assurance (EQA) reflect the innovative nature of its technology.
The projects recognised include OTT platform LaLigaSportsTV, real-time match analytics platform Mediacoach, hotel, restaurant and cafe industry-focused tools developed by the LaLiga BI & analytics department, corporate applications such as the clubs' portal and the LaLiga website.
The recognition comes with a tax reduction which the league plans to use to support its clubs financially following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas said: "We're proud to receive these types of certifications because they validate all the hard work that we are doing within the world of technology at LaLiga. We are firmly committed to innovation and this recognition is a boost for us to continue down this path in the mid- to long-term," explained LaLiga President Javier Tebas.
