Sydney Paralympics Boss Joins Basketball Australia Board

Basketball Australia today announced that Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games Chief Executive Lois Appleby has been appointed to the Board.

Appleby oversaw the most successful Paralympic Games in the history of the event as Chief Executive of the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee. She was responsible for all management, planning and financial control of the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee, and worked closely with SOCOG, NSW State Government, Commonwealth Government, International Paralympic Committee, private and public sector agencies and related industry and community groups to ensure the success of the Games.

Under Appleby’s stewardship, over 1.2 million tickets were sold to the Sydney Paralympic Games, record television audiences took in the action both in Australia and overseas, and over 300,000 school children enjoyed the opportunity of attending the Games.

Appleby was named as Sport Industry Australia’s 2000 Executive of the Year, recognition of her outstanding leadership of the Paralympic Games.

Basketball Australia President John Maddock today welcomed the addition of Appleby to the Board.

‘We are excited that Lois has agreed to join the Basketball Australia Board,’ Basketball Australia President John Maddock said today. ‘Lois brings a wealth of experience to the Board, and we look forward to working with her as Basketball Australia continues to move forward. She has a proven track record and will be a major asset for basketball in this country.’

Appleby is looking forward to working closely with all basketball constituents.

‘I am delighted to be able to join the Basketball Australia Board,’ Appleby said today. ‘I have a great love of the game, and I am looking forward to making a contribution to the sport. I have a particularly affinity for the grassroots of the sport, and am looking forward to working with the basketball community throughout Australia.’

Appleby has enjoyed a long and successful career in sport’s management, including serving as General Manager of the 1994 World Masters Games in Brisbane; consultant to the Brisbane City Council for the 1992 World Marathon Canoeing Championships; and as General Manager of the Australian Masters Games in 1991.

Appleby has a strong link to basketball, having played and coached throughout a long career, and her son Chris represented Australia at the 1983 and 1985 World University Games and played for the Canberra Cannons in the NBL.
