Tetley’s Bitter Super League Champions St Helens will take on Brisbane Broncos – the current Australian NRL Premiers – in the 2001 World Club Challenge.

The match will be held on Friday 26th January 2001 (Kick Off 8.00 PM) at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.

St Helens – who will be making their second appearance in the World Club Challenge after facing Melbourne Storm in last season’s match – earned the right to play the Broncos by beating Wigan Warriors in October’s Old Trafford Grand Final. Brisbane became Champions by defeating Sydney City Roosters in the NRL equivalent at Stadium Australia last August.

Commenting on the announcement, Super League Development Director Gary Tasker said, ‘We are delighted to be once again hosting one of the most exciting events in world Rugby League here in the UK. St Helens are the reigning Champions and the dazzling form they produced during the 2000 season gives us great confidence that they will do Britain proud. The fact that they are competing in this game for the second consecutive year says a great deal about the consistency of the club.

‘The clashes between Brisbane stars like Wendell Sailor and Gorden Tallis and St Helens heroes like Chris Joynt and Sean Long are absolutely mouthwatering and the Reebok Stadium is an international class sporting venue.’

Tasker added, ‘We hope that Rugby League fans throughout the UK will be excited by the World Club Challenge and we feel that tickets are priced at an extremely affordable level for such a premier event.’
