TotalEnergies, the French energy company, has signed up as a second-tier official sponsor of rugby union’s 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The firm, an established sponsor of French rugby, will use the tournament, to be held on home soil, to promote its range of offerings, and work with the organisers on sustainability initiatives “to create an environmentally responsible event”, notably through a decarbonised mobility plan and the supply of green energy.

TotalEnergies is the seventh official sponsor on board, below the three worldwide partners to date, in Societe Generale, Mastercard and Asahi.

Welcoming the new partner on Friday, Claude Atcher, chief executive of France 2023, said: “TotalEnergies wants to shift lines and play its full role in meeting the climate challenge. We want to move forward together towards the new energies that need to be at the centre of Rugby World Cup France 2023, and participate in its positive impact for society.

“I am delighted to have TotalEnergies, with its know-how and its expertise, among our official sponsors. TotalEnergies is a long-standing supporter of French rugby. We feel certain that its dense nationwide coverage will significantly contribute to our event’s success.”

Patrick Pouyanne, chairman and chief executive of the company, added: “It is an honour and a pleasure for TotalEnergies to be an Official Sponsor of Rugby World Cup France 2023. Integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect are key features of this sport, and they match our company’s values.

“More importantly, rugby is organised first and foremost around a team, just like TotalEnergies: a collective of women and men committed to the energy transition. France is our home, especially southwestern France, a land of rugby that is an integral part of our history and DNA.

“We want to celebrate our ties and close relationship with our stakeholders and customers across the country I am delighted that TotalEnergies’ teams will be putting their energy into making this great sports event a festive and popular French success worldwide!”

Meanwhile, Japan’s Taisho Pharmaceutical has become a third-tier official supplier of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The company will be building on its role as an official sponsor of the 2019 tournament held in Japan, and promoting its energy drink brand Lipovitan D.

Taisho’s association with rugby dates back to 2001 when Lipovitan D became a sponsor of the Japanese national team..

Taisho has been the title sponsor for matches between Japan and visiting overseas teams since 2002 and became top partner of the national team in 2020.

Taisho is the fifth official supplier to be named for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Having reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 edition, Japan have already qualified for the next edition, which will take place across 10 venues in nine host cities in France from 8 September to 28 October, 2023.

World Rugby and its agency partner IMG are responsible for signing up worldwide partners for the Rugby World Cup, and the governing body claimed in April that it was on track to have all six in place by this September.

Local organisers paid €34.5 million ($41.1 million) for the right to sell lower-tier sponsorship packages, and are working to a target of €70 million in revenue from this source.

The official sponsors now comprise GL Events, Loxam, Orange, Proman, SNCF, Total Energies and Vivendi while the official suppliers are Education First, Gilbert, HP, Lipovitan D and Tudor.
