The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) governing body has brought in Mastercard, the international credit card giant, as a main commercial partner for home matches across both international and domestic cricket until 2023.

Through a deal announced yesterday (September 5), the payments firm has become the title sponsor of all top-tier professional cricket played in India across the upcoming 2022-23 season.

This deal covers both men’s and women’s international cricket which will take place in the country, as well as domestic competitions such as the Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Ranji Trophy.

Mastercard takes over from Paytm, the Indian digital payments firm that had a deal for the rights between 2019 and 2023. That agreement has now ended early after reports earlier this year suggested it might.

Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI’s president, said: “The BCCI welcomes Mastercard as the title sponsor for home cricket matches for the 2022-23 season. Along with the international home series, the BCCI’s domestic tournaments are crucial as they are a stepping stone towards making India a strong international side.”

Faja Rajamannar, chief marketing and communications officer at Mastercard, added: “Cricket enjoys unparalleled popularity not just in India where it is a singular unifying force for the nation, but also in several countries around the world. It is therefore particularly relevant and opportune for us to have acquired the title sponsorship rights for all home international and domestic cricket matches organized by the BCCI.”

Mastercard’s most significant other sports sponsorship deal is the tie-up it has in place with UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, for the 2021 to 2024 cycle of the Champions League clubs’ competition.

Other major BCCI commercial sponsors, meanwhile, include online training platform Byju’s, with which it finalized a renewal in June, Dream11, Hyundai, and kit partner MPL Sports.
