The government of Catalonia has formally agreed its involvement in the Pyrenees-Barcelona bid for the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.

The announcement was made by Catalan president Pere Aragonès, who said the region’s participation was on the basis of “environmental sustainability, balance and territorial cohesion” and the use of its existing infrastructure.

The aim of the region’s involvement, he said, was to maximise the economic and social return of the games for the region beyond just the period in which they would take place.

Aragonès promised to work with the constituent areas of Catalonia to develop a strategy for the bid and to consult with the region’s citizens to ensure maximum buy-in.

A commission will be set up to help prepare the bid and how citizens will be able to participate.

Catalonia is entering into the candidacy alone after Javier Lambán, the president of Aragon, withdrew his region from the bid last month.

Both Aragonès and Lambán had sent letters to the Spanish Olympic Committee confirming their interest and support for the project, but Lambán accused Aragonès of failing to use agreed text referring to “Catalonia and Aragon” in his letter and accused him of disloyalty.

France and Andorra, which were also previously linked with the bid, are not involved either.

Quebec City and Vancouver in Canada, Salt Lake City in the USA and Sapporo in Japan are all potential bidders for the 2030 Winter Olympics.

The next games are in Milan-Cortina in Italy in 2026.
