Capgemini, the French IT company, has today been named as a worldwide supplier, at very much the last minute, to golf’s biennial Ryder Cup teams-based competition in which Europe takes on the USA, in a six-year deal that includes the firm securing elevated worldwide partner status for three years from 2023.

The agreement, which was announced today by the tournament’s organisers, the PGA of America and Ruder Cup Europe, will first see Capgemini as a worldwide supplier for this year’s event – which starts tomorrow at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin – before taking on more responsibility as a worldwide partner for the Rome 2023, Farmingdale 2025, and County Limerick 2027 editions.

The organisers have said that for all the above tournaments, Capgemini’s “industry-leading digital transformation capabilities will help to enhance the Ryder Cup for its fans.”

At Whistling Straits, and throughout the partnership, Capgemini will “look to provide technical support and transformational solutions to the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe.”

It has said it will, across the six years, promote the Ryder Cup across its various international locations, in order to grow the event’s global fanbase.

This marks the IT company’s first step into major golf sponsorship, with the firm having made waves earlier this month by becoming a top-tier partner of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, to be held in France.

The firm becomes the latest worldwide sponsor of this year’s Ryder Cup, with other brands in that role including automotive brand BMW, watchmaker Rolex, BP and RBC.

PepsiCO, PEGA and UPS are also official partners.

Guy Kinnings, director and chief commercial officer of the Ryder Cup at the European Tour, said: “The Ryder Cup is a truly global sporting event which connects people around the world so we are delighted Capgemini will be part of our commercial family for the next four editions, including as a worldwide partner from Rome onwards.

“Technology plays such an integral role in a modern Ryder Cup and Capgemini’s innovation and expertise in this area will unquestionably enhance our ability.”

Atman Ezzat, Capgemini’s chief executive, added: “I am thrilled that Capgemini will bring its deep expertise in technology to the world of golf for the first time in 2021 and for the coming years. This new long-term, worldwide partnership reflects the international breadth of the Capgemini Group.”

Capgemini’s wide-ranging partnership with World Rugby for the 2023 RWC in France meanwhile will also see the IT firm serve as that governing body’s global digital transformation partner.

Under the deal, Capgemini will “harness its innovation and technology expertise to enrich the tournament experience for fans in stadia and viewing via broadcast and digital platforms.”

As World Rugby’s global digital transformation partner, the Paris-based firm “will play its full role in enabling the international federation to achieve key strands of its recently-announced strategic plan and player welfare advancement strategy, delivering innovative digital solutions to support the growth of the sport at all levels.”

The IT company is the fourth worldwide partner on board for 2023, joining long-time sponsors Mastercard, the international credit card giant and Société Générale, the France-based international bank, as well as Japanese beverage company Asahi.

Capgemini is not the only sponsor the Ryder Cup has brought on board in the past week or so. US-based Tito’s Handmade Vodka was named as an official supplier of the event last week, while Cignpost Diagnostics, the Covid-19 test provider, was brought in as an official provider for Team Europe yesterday.

Under that agreement, Cignpost will provide travel testing for members of team Europe travelling from the UK.

Paul Dunstan, operations director of Ryder Cup Europe, has said: “Cignpost have delivered fast, reliable Covid-19 testing across many countries for the European Tour and we look forward to extending this relationship ahead of this year’s Ryder Cup."

The company joins Loro Piana, New Era, Fitleist and PRG as official suppliers to the European team.
