TV audiences climb for AFL and NRL grand finals
Australian Rules football’s AFL Grand Final secured its highest domestic average television audience since 2016 with an average of 3.81 million viewers tuning in, while the National Rugby League final also saw a significant increase on last year.
The peak audience figure for commercial broadcaster Seven Network for Saturday's AFL grand final in Brisbane, in which Richmond beat Geelong 81-50, was 4.28 million.
The average audience figure represented a 30 per cent increase on the 2019 number, partly based on the decision to play this year’s edition at night.
In Melbourne, the traditional home of the AFL grand final, the audience of 1.58 million was the highest ever for the city.
Sunday's NRL grand final, which took place in Sydney and saw the Melbourne Storm beat the Penrith Panthers 26-20, earned Nine Network an average of 2.96 million viewers and peak of 3.44 million.
The average was up 12 per cent on the 2.64 million in 2019, which represented one of the lowest figures ever for the game.
