Panathinaikos sign with Nova to end in-house OTT project
Panathinaikos' home Super League matches will be televised by pay-television broadcaster Nova Sports after all this season, after the Greek soccer giants backtracked on plans to stream games on their own over-the-top platform.
Nova is understood to have offered around €7 million ($8.15 million) for Panathinaikos' matches in the 2020-21 campaign.
The 2020-21 Super League Interwetten season got under way on 12 September, with Panathinaikos' first home game of the new campaign, a 1-0 win over Levadiakos on Sunday, only available in Greece on Panathinaikos TV.
Last month, the Athens-based club said it would carry all of its homes games on the OTT platform this season after rejecting a €5.7 million per season offer from Nova.
Panathinaikos said at the time that compared unfavourably with Nova's offers of €11 million per season to perennial champions Olympiakos and €6.5 million to city rivals AEK Athens.
Fans that have acquired season ticket streaming passes are in the process of being refunded, with Panathinaikos TV content to now focus on the club's youth teams and teams in other sports such as volleyball.
For 2018-19, Panathinaikos' matches were shown in Greece by ERT, as part of the public-service broadcaster's swoop for rights to seven top-flight clubs (Aris, Atromitos, Xanthi, Panetolikos, Apollon and Lamia were also included) in a two-year deal worth €51.7 million in total.
However, when ERT had to renegotiate that deal down for the 2019-20 season, due to a cut in its funding from a newly-elected government, Panathinaikos and Aris subsequently signed with Nova.
By proposing to stream matches on its own OTT platform, Panathinaikos were set to follow in the footsteps of PAOK, which have been streaming matches on PAOK TV since the start of the 2019-20 season.
An interview with Panagiotis Aroniadis, PAOK TV project manager and media director, on the club's OTT platform and the wider media landscape in the Greek Super League appeared in this month's issue of The Boardroom, available here.
