Astro nets exclusive rights in Malaysia to Liga NOS
Astro, the pay-television operator in Malaysia, has acquired rights to Portuguese soccer's Primeira Liga for the 2020-21 season, which starts tomorrow.
The exclusive deal was brokered by Sportfive, the international sports marketing agency, which last month was appointed as the exclusive distributor of international media rights to Liga NOS until the end of the 2022-23 season.
Astro will televise two games per matchday in English language, with its coverage to begin on 20 September with Sporting Lisbon versus Gil Vicente at 1.30am local time, followed by champions FC Porto against Braga at 4am.
Malaysian interest in Liga NOS could be about to surge with international winger Safawi Rasid (pictured), of Malaysian Super League side Johor Darul Ta’zim, set to join Portimonense. If the transfer goes through, Safawi will become the third Malaysian to play in Portugal, and the first since 2013.
This month, Sportfive has sealed Liga NOS renewals with Sportdigital in Germany and Altice's RMC Sport in France.
Sportfive distributed Portuguese league rights across Europe and Latin America in the previous three-year cycle, but has now taken on responsibility for global sales, outside of Portugal and "selected territories."
The 2020-21 season kicks off tomorrow with two games, starting with Famalicao against Lisbon giants Benfica.Sportcal
