StarTimes adds Canadian Premier League to soccer offering in Africa
StarTimes, the pay-television broadcaster that shows a wide variety of soccer in sub-Saharan Africa, is the latest international network to pick up rights to the Canadian Premier League.
Under the agreement with Mediapro Canada, an arm of the Spain-based sports rights and production agency, StarTimes will offer 14 games from the remainder of the 2020 competition on its ST Sports Life TV channel and streaming service StarTimes ON.
These will comprise seven first round games, the six playoff matches and the grand final.
As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the second season of the CPL has been condensed, with all fixtures taking place behind closed doors in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, and presented as The Island Games.
The CPL is expected to have appeal to African audiences because of the presence of various local players in the league, including Elimane Cissé of Senegal at Forge FC and Arnold Bouka Moutu of Congo at Valour FC.
StarTimes joins other international broadcasters that are showcasing the CPL, including Fox in USA and 1Sports in the Indian subcontinent.
The CPL is also available worldwide via OneSoccer, the Canadian soccer portal developed by Mediapro Canada, and being shown live in its home market by public-service broadcaster CBC. The league debuted in 2019, the first year of Mediapro Canada’s 10-year commercial agreement with the Canadian Soccer Association.
StarTimes has 13 million pay-TV subscribers in 47 territories, and StarTimes ON is available to almost 20 million users across the continent.
The African network recently landed non-exclusive French-language rights to Spanish soccer’s LaLiga for the next four years, and other competitions it will show in the 2020-21 season include Spain’s Copa del Rey, England’s FA Cup and Community Shield, Italy’s Coppa Italia and Europe’s Uefa Nations League and Europa League.
It also has rights to various African leagues, including the Ghana Premier League and the Uganda Premier League.
