NBC to shift Premier League streaming rights to Peacock
NBC, the US television network, will switch its streaming coverage of English soccer’s Premier League from NBC Sports Gold to Peacock, its new platform recently launched with parent company Comcast.
The network has announced that Peacock will stream 175 games exclusively for the 2020-21 season.
In total, the Peacock Premium platform will present more than 1,500 hours of Premier League live match and shoulder programming, which will include full-event replays for all 380 matches on-demand.
All content presented on NBC Sports Gold's 'Premier League Pass' streaming service will shift exclusively to Peacock from next season as the offering will be discontinued at the end of the season.
The main NBC channel and cable offering NBC Sports Network will continue to present live match coverage of the Premier League, as well as pre- and post-match shows and additional shoulder programming.
Premier League games on NBC and NBCSN will still be available to subscribers on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.
Peacock was rolled out in April but is only initially available to subscribers of Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex video platforms, with a nationwide launch slated for 15 July.
The service recently showed live sports for the first time with coverage of Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth last month.
For its launch on Wednesday, Peacock will provide free access to all NBC Sports’ four Premier League matches on that day, which includes a fixture between recently crowned champions Liverpool at Arsenal.
Rick Cordella, executive vice-president and chief revenue officer, Peacock said: "This exclusive Premier League programming is an exciting addition to our live sports content on Peacock Premium, and we are thrilled to continue delivering our best-in-class Premier League coverage to NBCUniversal linear television customers as well as new Peacock subscribers."
Peacock Premium will be available for $4.99 per month or $9.99 for ad-free viewing, but NBC is currently offering a year of access for $30.
NBC holds exclusive Premier League rights in USA a six-year deal running to 2021-22, with the broadcaster able to show all 380 matches each season across its various channels and platforms. The deal is valued at a total of $1 billion.
